Currency Converter
Convert an amount from one currency to another using live, up-to-date exchange rates. Rates refresh automatically when you change the source currency.
Knowing what a price actually costs in your own currency is the difference between a fair deal and an expensive mistake. A live converter that refreshes when you change the source currency keeps the numbers honest while you shop, budget or negotiate abroad.
When to use this
Use the currency converter whenever a price is quoted in a currency you do not think in: comparing a rent offer, judging whether a salary is livable, settling a shared bill with travelling friends, or deciding whether an online purchase is worth it once converted. Swapping the direction instantly shows the same value from the other side of the transaction.
Remember that the figure is a reference rate, not the rate your bank will charge. For a purchase you are about to make on a foreign card, expect the real cost to differ by a small spread. Use the converter to plan and compare, then confirm the effective rate with your provider for the exact amount.
How this works
When you pick a source currency, the tool fetches a full rate table for that currency from open.er-api.com, a free open exchange-rate service, and stores it locally. The converted amount is simply your input multiplied by the rate for the target currency. Because the rate table is keyed to the source currency, swapping or changing the source fetches a fresh table so the numbers always reflect the latest published rates.
Exchange rates from this service are reference rates compiled from central-bank and market data and updated roughly daily. They are accurate for planning and comparison but are not the rate your bank or card provider will use — providers add a spread (a margin on top of the mid-market rate) and may charge conversion fees, so the real amount you pay or receive differs.
The tool shows the last-updated timestamp for the rate table so you can judge freshness, and a per-pair reference rate (1 source = x target) for context. It does not handle currency conversion fees, dynamic intra-day rates, or the spread between buying and selling rates — for a transaction you are about to make, confirm the effective rate with your provider first.
Worked example
You are renting an apartment in Thailand listed at 25,000 THB/month and want to know the cost in euros.
- 1Set the source currency to Thai Baht (THB) and the target to Euro (EUR).
- 2Enter 25000 in the amount field.
- 3The tool fetches the THB rate table and multiplies — at a rate of roughly 0.026 EUR per THB, the result is about 650 EUR per month.
- 4Press Swap to check what your 800 EUR budget is worth in THB before you negotiate.
Frequently asked questions
- Are these the rates my bank will use?
- No. These are reference mid-market rates. Banks and card providers add a spread and may charge conversion fees, so the real amount differs — usually by 1–3%. Use this tool for planning and comparison, and confirm the effective rate with your provider before a transaction.
- How often are the rates updated?
- The upstream service updates roughly once per day. The last-updated timestamp shown on the page tells you exactly when the current rate table was published, so you can judge freshness.
- Why does the rate change when I swap currencies?
- Swapping changes the source currency, which fetches a fresh rate table keyed to the new source. The converted amount stays consistent — it is just expressed from the other direction.
- How many currencies are supported?
- Over 40 world currencies, covering all major and most regional currencies. If a pair shows "rate unavailable", that currency is not in the current table.
- Can I rely on this for tax or accounting?
- No. Reference rates are fine for budgeting and quick comparison. For tax, accounting or legal figures, use the official rate published by your tax authority for the relevant date.
