For women’s dresses and tops, the standard mapping is built around a 80 cm bust equalling US 4 / UK 8 / EU 36, with each 2 cm step moving one size: US = (bust − 80) ÷ 2 + 2, UK = (bust − 80) ÷ 2 + 6, EU = (bust − 80) ÷ 2 + 34, JP = (bust − 80) ÷ 2 + 5. China and Italy use the EU numeric scale. The result is rounded to the nearest half size, matching how women’s dress sizes step.

For men’s jackets and suits, the systems differ in kind, not just offset. The US and UK size a jacket by the chest in inches, so US = UK = chest cm ÷ 2.54, rounded. The EU and Italy size by half the chest in centimetres, so EU = chest cm ÷ 2 (a 100 cm chest gives EU 50). Japan runs about 10 below the EU number, and China uses the EU-equivalent. The converter labels the US and UK output as chest-inches so the unit is clear.
