It works the same for VAT, GST and local sales tax — just enter the rate that applies where you are, and choose whether the price you have includes the tax or not.

Cómo se calcula esto
Consumption taxes such as VAT, GST and sales tax are quoted in two ways. A net (tax-exclusive) price has the tax added on top; a gross (tax-inclusive) shelf price already contains the tax. This calculator handles both directions from a single amount and rate.
In add mode, the net amount is the price before tax, the tax is net × rate, and the gross is net + tax. In remove mode, the gross amount is the shelf price, the net is gross ÷ (1 + rate), and the tax is gross − net. The same arithmetic covers VAT, GST and sales tax because all are percentage-based.
The model applies a single flat rate to a single amount. It does not handle mixed-rate baskets (where different goods carry different rates), zero-rated or exempt goods, reverse-charge VAT, rounding rules that vary by jurisdiction, or sales tax in markets where the rate depends on the delivery location. For a multi-item receipt, calculate each line at its own rate or use the rate that applies to the dominant item.
Ejemplo resuelto
A shelf price of €120 that includes 20% VAT (remove mode).
- 1Net amount = 120 ÷ (1 + 0.20) = 120 ÷ 1.20 = €100.
- 2Tax = 120 − 100 = €20.
- 3In add mode, the same €100 net would become €120 gross after adding €20 of tax.
Preguntas frecuentes
- Neto = Bruto ÷ (1 + tipo), e Impuesto = Bruto − Neto.
- What is the difference between VAT-inclusive and VAT-exclusive?
- VAT-exclusive (net) prices have tax added on top; VAT-inclusive (gross) prices already contain the tax. The remove mode extracts the tax from a gross price; the add mode applies tax to a net price.
- Does this work for GST and local sales tax?
- Yes. VAT, GST and sales tax are all percentage-based, so the same add and remove maths applies. Just enter the rate that applies where you are, and pick the mode that matches how your price is quoted.
