How this is calculated

This calculator applies a tip percentage to a bill and then splits the total evenly across a group. The tip amount is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage (as a decimal), the total is the bill plus the tip, and each person’s share is the total divided by the number of people.

The split is equal by design, which suits shared meals where everyone owes roughly the same. For uneven orders, you would calculate each person’s share separately against their own subtotal, which this tool does not do.

The model does not assume whether you tip on the pre-tax subtotal or the post-tax total — that is a local convention you control by entering the bill amount you choose to tip on. It does not include a service charge already on the bill (subtract that first if it is present), currency conversion, or rounding to a convenient amount, which many people do in practice.
