Ideal Weight Calculator (Devine)
The Devine formula gives a reference healthy weight for a given height and was originally developed for drug dosing. It is a simple guide to what a mid-range healthy weight looks like for your stature, not a target you must reach.
Enter your sex and height in centimetres. The calculator returns the Devine ideal weight.
Use it as a rough signpost for what a mid-range healthy weight looks like for your stature — not a number you must hit or a judgement on your current weight.

How this is calculated
This calculator estimates a reference healthy weight for a given height using the Devine formula, originally developed for drug dosing. For men, ideal weight = 50 kg + 2.3 kg for each inch over 5 feet. For women, ideal weight = 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg for each inch over 5 feet. The calculator converts your height in centimetres to inches, finds how many inches exceed 60 (5 feet), and applies the formula.
The formula assumes a medium frame and average muscle mass, so it gives a single mid-range number rather than a span. Healthy weight is genuinely a range, and body composition matters more than the exact figure.
The model does not account for frame size (small-boned people sit lower, large-boned higher), age, muscle mass, or the different body compositions across ethnic groups. Other formulas (Hamwi, Miller, Robinson) give slightly different numbers; Devine is the most commonly cited in clinical references. Use the result alongside how you feel, perform and look, not as a strict target.
Worked example
A man who is 175 cm tall.
- 1Height in inches = 175 ÷ 2.54 ≈ 68.9 in.
- 2Inches over 5 feet = 68.9 − 60 = 8.9 in.
- 3Ideal weight = 50 + 2.3 × 8.9 ≈ 70.5 kg.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the Devine formula?
- For men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet. For women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet. It assumes a medium frame and average muscle mass.
- Is my ideal weight a strict target?
- No. Healthy weight spans a range, and body composition matters more than the number. Use it as a rough signpost alongside how you feel and perform.
- Are there other ideal-weight formulas?
- Yes — Hamwi, Miller and Robinson, among others. They give slightly different numbers; Devine is the most commonly cited in clinical references.
