Exchange Rate Fee Calculator
Currency providers rarely charge the mid-market rate — they add a markup, a margin baked into the rate they offer you. That markup is a hidden fee, and on large transfers it can cost far more than any stated commission. This calculator compares the mid-market rate with the rate you are actually offered to reveal the true cost.
Enter the mid-market rate (the one you find on a live rate site), the rate your bank or provider quoted, and the amount you are converting. The calculator shows the hidden fee, the effective markup percentage, and what you would receive at the mid-market rate for comparison.
It is the tool to run before any large currency conversion, because the markup — not the stated fee — is usually where the real cost hides, and seeing it in cash terms makes it impossible to ignore.

How this is calculated
The calculator compares two rates for the same currency pair: the mid-market rate (the real exchange rate) and the rate your provider quoted. The amount you would receive at the mid-market rate is the amount times the mid-market rate; the amount you will receive from the provider is the amount times the provider’s rate. The hidden fee is the difference between the two. The effective markup percentage is the gap between the rates, divided by the mid-market rate, times 100.
This isolates the rate markup from any separate stated fee. If your provider also charges a flat fee or commission, add it to the hidden fee shown here for the full cost of the conversion. The two together — hidden markup plus stated fee — are what you actually pay to move the money.
The mid-market rate moves continuously during trading hours, so for a fair comparison use a rate quoted at the same time as your provider’s quote. A rate from earlier in the day can overstate or understate the markup. The currency selector sets the display symbol for the received amount; enter the amount in the currency you are sending.
Worked example
Converting €1,000 to USD. Mid-market rate 1.08, provider’s rate 1.06.
- 1Receive at mid-market = 1,000 × 1.08 = $1,080.
- 2Receive from provider = 1,000 × 1.06 = $1,060.
- 3Hidden fee = 1,080 − 1,060 = $20.
- 4Effective markup = (1.08 − 1.06) ÷ 1.08 × 100 ≈ 1.85%.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the mid-market rate?
- It is the real exchange rate between two currencies — the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the global market. It is the benchmark a fair provider should charge, before any margin or fee.
- How do I find my provider’s markup?
- Compare the rate your provider quotes with the mid-market rate for the same pair at the same time. The difference, divided by the mid-market rate, is the markup percentage. This calculator does that comparison for you.
- Is a markup the same as a fee?
- A markup is a fee, just hidden in the rate rather than listed separately. Some providers charge both a stated fee and a markup — add the stated fee to the hidden cost shown here for the full picture.
- Where do I get the mid-market rate?
- A live currency-rate site or financial news source gives the current mid-market rate for your pair. Use a rate quoted at the same time as your provider’s quote for a fair comparison, since the rate moves during the day.
- My provider charges a fee as well — how do I include it?
- Add the stated fee to the hidden fee shown here. The total of the two is the full cost of the conversion. A provider can be cheap on rate but expensive on fee, or vice versa, so count both.
