City Tax & Fees Calculator

Many cities and tourist destinations levy taxes on top of the advertised room rate — a per-night city tax, a per-person tourism fee, or a percentage resort fee. These are easy to miss when booking and can add noticeably to a stay. This calculator adds them up so you know the true cost of your accommodation.

Enter the nightly room rate, number of nights and guests, a per-night city tax per room, a per-person-per-night tourism fee, and any percentage service/resort fee. The calculator returns the total taxes and fees and the grand total of your stay.

It is the line-item that booking sites bury — the city taxes, tourism fees and resort charges that turn a "€120/night" room into a noticeably bigger bill at checkout.

How this is calculated

The room subtotal is the nightly rate times the number of nights. The city tax is a fixed amount per room per night, multiplied by the number of nights. The tourism fee is a fixed amount per person per night, multiplied by guests and nights. The resort or service fee is a percentage of the room subtotal. The total taxes and fees are the sum of those three, and the grand total is the room subtotal plus the taxes and fees.

City and tourism taxes are common in many European and Asian destinations and are usually payable at checkout, not included in the booking price — which is why the advertised rate understates the real cost. Resort fees are mandatory daily charges for amenities, common in certain markets, and are added on top of the room rate.

The model assumes the taxes and fees apply for every night of the stay. Some cities exempt stays beyond a certain length, or charge a reduced rate, and some taxes are per-person only above a certain age. Check the local rules for your destination for the exact structure, and confirm whether your booking platform collects the taxes upfront or you pay them at the property.

Worked example

A 4-night stay, €120/night, 2 guests, €4 city tax/room/night, €2 tourism fee/person/night, 5% resort fee.

  1. 1Room subtotal = 120 × 4 = €480.
  2. 2City tax = 4 × 4 = €16; tourism fee = 2 × 2 × 4 = €16.
  3. 3Resort fee = 480 × 0.05 = €24.
  4. 4Total taxes & fees = 16 + 16 + 24 = €56; grand total = 480 + 56 = €536.

Frequently asked questions

What is a city tax?
It is a per-night tax charged by many cities (especially in Europe) on tourist accommodation, usually a fixed amount per room or per person per night. It is often payable at checkout, not included in the booking price.
What is a resort fee?
A mandatory daily charge added by some hotels for amenities like pools, gyms or Wi-Fi, common in certain markets. It is usually a fixed amount or a percentage of the room rate, on top of the advertised price.
Are these taxes refundable?
City and tourism taxes are generally mandatory and non-refundable. Resort fees may sometimes be avoided by choosing a hotel without them. Always check the total cost including taxes and fees before booking.
Are city taxes included in the booking price?
Often not. In many destinations the city or tourism tax is collected at the property at checkout, so the advertised nightly rate understates the real cost. Check your booking confirmation for whether taxes are prepaid or payable on arrival.
Do children pay the tourism fee?
It varies. Some cities exempt children below a certain age or charge a reduced rate. If your group includes children, check the local rule and adjust the guest count or per-person fee accordingly.
