It is a gentle aid for feeling less groggy on waking — pair it with consistent sleep hygiene rather than treating cycle timing as a substitute for enough total sleep.

Como isso é calculado

Sleep happens in cycles of roughly 90 minutes, moving through light, deep and REM stages. Waking at the end of a cycle tends to feel easier than waking mid-cycle, so timing sleep in 90-minute blocks can help you wake more refreshed. This calculator uses a 90-minute cycle length plus a 15-minute fall-asleep buffer.

In wake mode, you enter a target wake time and the calculator suggests bedtimes that end on a cycle boundary — for 6, 5 and 4 cycles (about 9, 7.5 and 6 hours of sleep). In bed mode, it takes the current time as a bedtime and suggests wake times 4, 5 and 6 cycles later, again ending on a boundary.

The model assumes a fixed 90-minute cycle and a fixed 15-minute sleep-onset time, both of which vary between people and between nights. It does not account for sleep quality, caffeine and screen exposure late in the evening, sleep disorders, age-related changes in sleep architecture, or the fact that the first cycle is often shorter than later ones. Consistent schedule, a dark cool room and limiting screens matter more than exact cycle timing.

Exemplo prático

You must wake at 07:00 and want a full night of 6 cycles.

  1. 1Sleep needed = 6 × 90 = 540 minutes (9 hours).
  2. 2Add the 15-minute fall-asleep buffer = 555 minutes before the alarm.
  3. 3Bedtime = 07:00 minus 555 minutes = 21:45 the previous evening.

Perguntas frequentes

O momento importa tanto quanto o total.
How long is a sleep cycle?
About 90 minutes for most adults, though it varies. A full night is typically 4–6 cycles. The calculator uses 90 minutes plus a 15-minute fall-asleep buffer to suggest bedtimes or wake times that end on a cycle boundary.
Why do I still feel tired after 8 hours?
Timing matters as much as total sleep. Waking mid-cycle can leave you groggy even after enough sleep. Aligning your wake time to a cycle boundary often helps, alongside a consistent schedule and good sleep hygiene.
